thefascination:

Hi all! My name is Anh Le, and I am a fashion student at Parsons the New School. I am conducting a Tumblr experiment of sorts for my narrative class, where I attempt to define a new kind of subculture. Some people believe that subcultures can’t possibly exist anymore, because groups like punks, goths, and lolitas. Now, people argue that contemporary culture is too undefinable for new counter-cultural groups to emerge. Why revolt if there’s nothing to revolt against?, is a general argument. (X) (X)

So I’m trying to look at this in a different way. Maybe, in our digital age, we just have new kinds of subcultures? Maybe they don’t exist IRL, but solely on Tumblr? Maybe fandoms are a subculture? Maybe not? Maybe the social justice community is the modern youth anti-movement? I’m not sure, so I’m asking for help.

I’d really love to gather information and see if Tumblr bloggers see themselves as part of a community, whether it’s anti-mainstream society or not. Whether you’re into soft grunge or Anime or Disney or whatever, how do you see yourself as a part of Tumblr? Are you part of a subcultural movement?

I want to gather this research and, if I do find that subcultures exist on Tumblr, try to map out what we wear, how we express ourselves, and what we create. Since I’m a fashion student, I’m mostly interested in style. I want to see if there is any kind of physically defining characteristics linking Tumblr groups like there were in past subcultures, or if the internet erases all of that.

So, if you have the time, pleasepleaseplease reblog this post and answer the following questions (feel free to answer in whatever way you’d like!). I’m also going to post my research and project progress as I go, so any critique or comments would be amazing! Thank you for your help and have a good day! :)

Copy + paste:

1. What is your age and where are you from?

2. What is your idea of a subculture? Do you believe new subcultures exist today?

3. Do you see specific groups or communities existing on Tumblr? If not, then how would you describe/catalog Tumblr?

4. Are you part of a Tumblr community? If so, which community?

5. What are some defining characteristics of your community? What brings you together?

6. Do you dress in any certain way that is linked to or reflects your Tumblr community?

7. How do you use Tumblr in relation to your community? Do you contribute creatively to your community? If so, what do you make?

8. Would you say your Tumblr community is a subculture?

9. Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or your Tumblr community?
